The shrinking size of items in the grocery store.

Every notice that the 2 quart container of Orange Juice is really less than 2 quarts, or the pint of Hagen Daz ice cream is really 14 ounces. These are changes made by big food companies to raise prices without the appearance of raising the price. The package size is close enough to the original size and the price is the same, the hope is that the consumer does not notice that they are getting less for more money. If enough companies do this, is this masking underlying inflation and ultimately making the economy worse in the long run? My hunch is yes, by deceiving the public, the public may not understand that inflation is really occurring. When inflation indexes are measured is this size deflation being accounted for in the over statics? Again my suspicion is no.

Immunization and Liability

There are plenty of reports of people suing some drug company when they or their children were either harmed or allegedly harmed from some vaccine that was administered.

Maybe what we need are lawsuits and criminal punishment when parents do not immunize their children for deadly diseases. There are a whole group of parents who refuse to vaccinate their children for a variety of potentially fatal diseases. When these un-vaccinated children get one of those diseases they put other people at risk. There was a case of a woman whose child got measles in Germany, came back to the US with her child, went to the doctor, and while waiting in the doctor’s reception area, a number of children in that area were exposed to the measles virus, got the measles (they were too young to receive their measles shot), and at least one child died. This woman by deciding not to immunize exposed other people to her decision. If she wants to make that decision she should be liable for any consequences.

People assume that in not getting vaccinated they are making a purely personal decision, they are not, they are making a decision that potentially affects a large number of people. This woman’s decision should make her liable for murder, and certainly she should be considered a target of civil lawsuits. Not choosing to immunize carry consequences, this is not just personal. If you chose not to immunize you inherit responsibilities for what may happen later.

Retail Sales Data and the Business Press

Regularly on business news programs there are comments about how bad the last day, weekend, or month was because of some weather event(s) and how this ruined retail sales for that period.

I view this negativism as mostly bunk. It snows over a weekend, and magically whatever money people planned to spend during that period magically turns into savings, with the retail sales people permanantly losing that revenue. This is in essence the reported viewpoint. While some level of impulse buying is curtailed by bad weather, if that is the engine that drives our economy, then we are doomed. If I need to buy something and the weather makes it difficult or impossible I will simply delay my purchase. In the end the retailer still get my purchase just later in time.

When the weather becomes an important part of our daily business report it was a slow news day, and the reporters, editors and producers are creating a news story to keep us listening to them.

The Insanity Plea

I wonder if we as a society have gotten to the point that we no longer accept insanity as a defense in court. 50 years ago everyone would have been exposed to individuals with psychological problems. Today due to modern drugs we have dramatically reduced the number of people who outwardly appear to have problems. I think this is a significant part of the problem, lack of exposure. My suspicion is that a majority of people have zero tolerance for non medicated psychological problems. They assume that if a drug exists to reduce their problem the individual should take the drug. Therefore not being medicated means no excuse for any crime committed, that person is guilty of they crime. This is not the only reason that we see people who are “insane” being found guilty instead of being found insane; many people (not me) feel that punishing criminals (as opposed to re-rehabilitating them) is vital.
